Lewis and Hathaway: Investigating Another Brilliant Crime-Solving Combo

If you’re familiar with ITV’s Inspector Morse, you’ll already be clued in about Lewis. Inspector Robbie Lewis, played by Kevin Whately, first appeared as Lewis opposite John Thaw in Morse. He’s the lovable and dedicated workaholic who’s now a widower. After being promoted from Morse’s Sergeant to Detective Inspector, he’s ready to prove himself.

Lewis is paired up with Detective Sergeant James Hathaway (Laurence Fox), a younger and more buttoned down detective who clashes with Lewis’ way of conducting an investigation.

“With Lewis and Hathaway we opted for a more varied character relationship,” says executive producer Ted Childs. “Lewis, the experienced murder solving sleuth, would remain an appealingly honest, highly resourceful and capable detective. He would be seen to make up for his apparent lack of intellectual exposure and ascetic awareness, through his innate emotional intelligence.”

“Accordingly, Hathaway was established as a highly intelligent and culturally aware young man, but one still on a journey of personal development.”

Eventually, these two come to respect one another and work well together, investigating complex cases by bringing their unique styles and skills to catch the culprit no matter what.

Now in its 8th season, this successful British crime drama continues to serve a dedicated fanbase who are hooked. Leading man Kevin Whately also has a deep appreciation for the character after all these years.

“It’s been 10 years of Lewis, including the pilot, so it all feels very familiar, like family,” says Whately. “If you add that to 14 years of Morse then this is my 30th year playing Lewis, so I’m afraid the character is me now.”
