As much as we know how important it is to maintain a healthy bodyweight, not everyone is able to do so. Some – no matter their fitness or dieting routine – struggle to keep the weight off. On the other side of the scale, many have trouble gaining pounds when needed.

On April 18, 2018, the Government of Canada confirmed that it would dedicate $10.5 million over the course of three years “to promote healthier lifestyles among young Canadians and their families.” These funds will be split across seven, detailed projects, in which you can learn about right here.

“The projects funded today will help Canadians make important changes to improve their health, with the benefit of direct input and support from the community,” commented Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Health. “For example, by working with youth to build cooking skills and foster peer support, these projects will make it easier for Canadians to lead healthier lives.”

“I am proud that we are supporting projects that focus on concrete actions like building environments for active transportation – such as walking and biking – in low-income neighborhoods,” added Dr. Theresa Tam,
Chief Public Health Officer of Canada. “These innovative projects help create supportive environments for Canadians to develop healthy habits and address the common risk factors underlying many chronic diseases.”

The Public Health Agency of Canada notes this is part of its “Innovation Strategy,” an initiative designed to prioritize “action related to mental health and healthier weights.” It focuses on more than 1.5 million Canadians spread across 800+ communities in need.
